911 3.2 Starter issue
Apologies if this posts twice - first time poster (with his dream come true 1989 3.2)
Hi folks, When I turn over my 3.2 cold, the starter makes an awful racket (like you've tried starting the car twice). I know there are issues and potential flywheel damage, but mine is an '89 which I believe had the hardened flywheel from new. When warm, the starter spins fine, no noise. Before I order a new starter, has anyone had luck servicing theirs? Could the grease be so gummed up that it sticks when cold (not fully moving) but when hot, the grease loosen's up and it's good?? Wondering if I can remove and lubricate, but the units don't look particularly serviceable… many thanks! |

the 1987 G50 Carrera was made with a thicker gearbox flange but they forgot to tell the starter guys and the net result was that the starter pinion did not fully engage the ring gear when starting and when this happened it made an bad grinding noise. The fix was to drop the engine , remove the ring gear and install a thicker version. It says in my Parts and technical Reference catalog that the correct gear was installed on engines no 64k 01999 through 64k 02208 and from 64k 03112. Hope this helps in isolating the issue. You could also look at the end of the ring gear from beneath and se if it's chewed up

+1 Pinion Malfunction, get on it sooner than later. You do not want it to fail when you are out and about.
But before that, what is your voltage at the battery when cold and when hot? Oh yeah, Welcome Aboard!

DRACO - when you say pinion issue - would that mean full replace of starter or can one service anything on it?
Many thanks for the reply and the congrats! My other car is a 1962 Micro Bus - amazing how similar the set up is of these two cousins and a world apart from my wife's Mazda... |

It should be, it is part of the solenoid on the starter. Sometimes they do get sticky, start of failure. A good shop should be able to rebuild it.
![]() I had mine rebuilt and purchased a VW starter that out of the box the pinion stuck, lucky it was warrantied. If you have it rebuilt, have them bench test it in front of you to insure it is operating properly.
