Solved exhaust drone on 2 in / 2 out B&B

I have an 86 Targa with B&B headers with heat and a 2 in / 2 out muffler. The Billy Boat muffler was too loud and had a bad drone. I replaced the muffler with a MagnaFlow muffler. I picked up a bit of low end torque with this muffler. Overall volume came down. Great sound above 3K. However the drone between 2k and 3k could make your head split. I just installed a Dynatech Vortex into the driver's side outlet. Overall volume might be down a tiny bit but THE DRONE IS GONE! It now sounds great at all rpms.

This should work for all 2 / 2 muffler systems. Better than capping one outlet.

2-3000 rpm exhaust drone

Thank you for this drone update.
I LOVE the sound of my B&B header and exhaust system, but the drone can become wearisome after a while.
Its just - they sound so sweet when the motor is really working and it really opened up the motor's performance!!

Anyway, I have a cap for one end of the exhaust outlet, but it does drop the power noticeably and so I typically dont like using it. Im glad to hear of an alternative.

Thanks for posting.
Allan.

I will google but do you have a link? It looks like they only go down to 3" diameter. Did you find a smaller one.

I just noticed you are local, I might try to come by and sample at some point if you are up for it.

Check the muffler outlets at the can, you have to remove the tips to see clearly. Early B&B had 2x full size outlets, and would drone, later ones had a full size outlet on one side but only a pinky sized outlet on the other side, no drone

My Billy Boat outputs are 3 inches so it fit perfect. Lots of vendors sell these e.g., Summit, jegs.com, etc. I got mine on ebay. Might be able to get a 2 or 2.5 inch version.

Send me a PM on where in Atlanta you are.

Also if you need a smaller diameter you can try the Car Chemistry C C insert. Exhaust - CC Inserts - Car Chemistry, Inc.

I have read good things about them.

I fixed it for my brother by simply blocking off one of the outlets. It was amazing how much difference it made.

Bill,
The dual large outlet muffler is the one I have & yes it does drone between 2200-2900rpm.
I guess I will try this solution and see what it does.

My question or hesitation is: I dont know if slowing exhaust flow out of one outlet on the muffler will create back pressure issues on one bank of the cylinders and not on another - thereby unevenly stressing the motor??
I suppose this wont be an issue if the exhaust gasses are mixed inside the muffler, but I cant see that without cutting it open, and I dont want to do that.
