Shifting Problems
I have recently developed downshifting problems in my 83 SC. It started with shifting from 5th to 4th. I would get grinding and would not try any further to get into 4th. It acted as if going from 5th to 2nd. Now I cannot downshift from 3rd to 2nd at all. There is no grinding the gearshift just stops instead of going into 2nd. There is no problem with going up thru the gears.
Is this a coupler and bushing problem? Thanks

Hmmm...
Not sure, but check the easy stuff first. I'd open the plate on the floorboard of the back seats and check the coupler/bushings. You could also check the ones under the shifter and the one just benind it. Has the feel of your clutch changed at all? Does it still engage about an inch off of the floor as it should? If not could be a clutch cable out of adjustment although I think these usual symptoms are a grinding 1st and reverse. Short of this I'd think the transmission might be the source. Ryan

You might have more than one problem based on the symptoms you describe. I agree with bigchill on the order of investigation. Unfortunately that 5th to 4th problem sounds like synchros.
