901 trans help

Good morning. Took the 912 out for a run to Supercar Sunday yesterday morning and ran into a problem I've not had before. Could not shift into 4th gear for the forst 20 or so minutes of the drive, and when I could finally get in into 4th, it was only like every 3rd try. 5th gear from 4th was not do-able at all.

Car usually shifts pretty well, although shift linkage seems a bit sloppy. Car goes into to Reverse without incident, 1st gear synchro is pretty much gone, and car grinds occasionally going from 1st to 2nd, although that may be due to the sloppy linkage. Any thoughts? I will drain the fluid and check it with a magnet on my next day off, but maybe someone out there has some ideas.

Car is a '68 912, 5-speed dogleg trans.

Sloppy shifter = bad bushings= inaccurate gear selection.

Yeah, I figured there was definitely some bushing/linkage issues, it's been sloppy since I got the car in November. However, not being able to get into 4th or 5th?

Open the tunnel cover in front of the rear seats and see if the coupler bushings are intact. When they go away, you generally lose a gear or two. Then hold the shift rod at the coupler and move the shifter with your other hand to see if there's slop at the shifter end.
