Introduction

My name is John, and I live in East Tennessee. I have always been a "car guy". I bought my first car, a rusty TR-6 for $700 when I was 15, way back in the 1970's. From there on, it was British sports cars, more TR-6s. MG-TF, MGAs, an MGB, AH300, a slew of E-Types. As I got older, these car became less comfortable. So I bought a new Porsche, and then a progression of the late model Porsches (993, 993 C2S, Boxsters, a couple of 997s). I loved driving them, and found them reliable and practical.

But there was one itch that I just had not scratched... I think we all want the car we wanted in high school. What I wanted was a 911SC. And now I have one.

I traded an old Jag for this 1981 SC. It had been sitting for years, neglected in a collection. I trailered it home and took it to a local 911 guru. He dropped the engine for a major service, seals, etc. The car wanted to pop out of first and the synchs were weak, so he rebuilt the transmission and placed a new clutch.

Because I have gotten used to being comfortable, he installed a Griffiths AC kit with new blowers, compressor, condensers, evaporators, lines, and the aux condenser in the left rear fender. Cools wonderfully now.

It just got back from the trim shop getting a new headliner installed, thus the side windows are out. Glass guy ran out of time.

Now it is just a matter of a few little detail parts to get this old girl in the condition she deserves!

Welcome to the addiction.

The Griffith's AC upgrade is the best thing I ever did to my 911 to make it a car I wanted to drive all summer. Enjoy your new toy and drive that beauty as much as possible. It will put a big smile on your face.

Welcome. I had a TR6 back in the 70,s I loved it but a rear end accident and trouble getting body parts from British Leyland convinced me to sell it. Then I bought a 912 and found a world of difference.

As long as you are not yet driving it, have your mechanic check the auxiliary oil cooler. With AC, in Tennessee, you will need a high capacity oil cooler. You may still have the original trombone oil cooler.

Welcome! She's beautiful!! I too started early-but with Italian cars (124 Spiders). After spending every single hard working cent on paying this local shop down the street to repair it, watching them chuckle every time I drove that thing in and said "Hey Tony's back", and getting sound early advice "kid go buy a air-cooled VW and learn to work on cars"; like you, my dream of owning an air-cooled 911 finally happened about 7 years ago. I doubt it will ever go away! Congrats on that SC and joining this awesome community of Pelicans! A truly great group of people for sure.
