I also ran with the chain covers off to see if anything was making noise there but all was fine. The noise was coming from the chain housings, I guess through the crankshaft to the nose bearing.

Wow - looks like you dodged a bullet there. This would’ve gotten ugly once the flywheel let go.

And cudos to running the engine with chain housing covers off. You don’t see that every day.
