Locating 1971 911T VIN
Friends,
I am restoring my (deceased) father's 1971 911T. The VIN number, under the hood, above the spare tire, was cut out. The vehicle has a new state issued VIN number given to it. I am trying to locate the original VIN number. I submitted a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity request form, with the engine # and transmission #, with the objective of finding out the original VIN but they won't process it without me providing the original VIN, which is a catch 22! Can anyone tell me all the places the VIN number could be found on the car? Thank you, Lane |

Lane,
The four places I know of the vin number were: 1. Sticker on driver door jam. 2. Plate on front hood latch panel. 3. Stamped ino chassis next to smugglers box. 4. Plate on left roof A pillar. There is a production number stamped into the metal dash below the radio. This number is tied to the original vin. Good luck, Thomas

Thank you, Thomas. The plate on the left roof A pillar, is it visible? I had read that the VIN might be stamped on the A frame underneath the interior padding.

there would be a tag (visible) riveted to the A pillar.

Thomas has given the definitive answer. If someone went to the trouble to cut out the stamped VIN by the smuggler's box, they certainly got to the easily removed riveted tags and door sticker. That extensive of a removal may have included the production number behind the knee pad as well, but it's worth a look.
There is also a hand written production number, in grease pencil under the top dash pad, on the driver's side--removal of the dash is required to see it, and that requires removal of the windshield. This would be the last resort, IMO, if there is no number behind the knee pad. Still, don't know if Porsche can/ will correlate the production number to a VIN. You may want to contact them to be certain.

Porsche will not correlate a VIN with a production number, I tried on my previous project that had a similar situation.

Thanks everyone! So, is there anyway to track down the original VIN number? Using the Body number, engine number, transmission number or all of the above?
I also read that there could be a number under the carpet, next to the shifter (tunnel?), that is 10 digits and very similar to the VIN... |
