Does your ride set off car alarms?

Hysterical post . . .
There is a vape shop right next to my office. Four kids work there and they all drive rice rockets which are essentially Bondo machines with $5000 rims and wheels . They all park together backing their cars into the parking stalls. I'll take my 911 to work once a month. When I drive my car by it sets off their car alarms one at a time as I drive by. The kids run out in a panic to their cars thinking someone is stealing their rims. I get them every time going to work and then coming home.

My dogs hear me coming home from a block away. The Honduh's chirp alarm setting does the rest for the DD.

Each time (5 or 6)I have installed an m&k muffler on a 911, I would start setting off car alarms. Not to say it's an m&k issue, more saying that the stock exhausts didn't.

My old exhaust would cause ringing in the ears, and a splitting headache after about 45 minutes without ear protection. But it made great power, and wailed like a banshee at red line.
Fun times. What did you say ? |

Yes. Especially in parking structures. Rev it once and you start to hear chirps. Rev it again and somebody goes off. I think its quite cool.

Maybe I'm the old curmudgeon, but I'm no fan of super loud exhausts. My 911 is stock, so it doesn't set off car alarms very often.
But I have a bike that's very loud. It easily sets off car alarms--parking garage or open air. And it's a nuisance to be the a-hole who does that. Who wants to be the douche who's always disturbing the peace? Like the gangsta playing the "music" in their car so loudly your fillings are rattling when they pull up to the red light two cars behind you? When I left my house at 5:45 this morning, I barely idled and short-shifted my way through my neighborhood (and through the parking garage once there). Of course, on the open highway there and back, I let 'er rip.

It did, I then got rid of the m&K muffler.

Mine isn't that loud IMHO. I have driven cross country and to Oregon and back, never been yanked by the popo....it's just "muscular".....

I haven't set any off with my 911 hotrod yet but my Cobra replica did it all the time with side pipes and 95db's at idle. MY 911 is actually louder than the cobra so it shouldn't be a problem either.

Used to set off alarms with my old VW Thing with Supertrapp spark arrestors on it. No muffler. I could not figure out why alarms were always going off around me. I would just idle thru parking lots, sounded like a 1600 Cc harley i guess.

In addition to the 911, i also have an Austin Healey 3000 fitted with a single muffler side exit 'works rally' exhaust rather than a twin box rear exit factory system. It regularly sets off car alarms in the street and on a recent decibel limited track day, made the man with the noisemeter fall over clutching his ears when i revved it to the 3/4 of the rev limit
Whilst i had a giggle at the expense of his hearing, it meant i couldnt take part in the track day (The track is Goodwood where they have loud and quiet track days due to the proximity to housing)Andrew |

SSI + M&K 2in2out and a cut up airfilterlid. Pretty noticable
![]() Not activating that much alarms. In an underground parking a bit more. Maybe US alarms are more sensitive than Euros. Quite a few people looking back in fear to see what is behind them though...

Funny thread. Depending on which car I'm driving, I love to get my juvenile on. My 911 3.2 has an open air filter lid, stock heat exchangers / manifolds and a Dansk 1 in / out muffler. It sounds good, but I wouldn't call it loud by any means (although some might).
My old MkV R32 (also a 3.2 six cylinder!) sounds GLORIOUS with stock exhaust and a Walker Dynomax swapped in place of the factory primary muffler / center resonator. It's my son's car now. We can hear him departing / arriving our neighborhood. Wife's A3 2.0t is too quiet, but I don't care. I don't spend money modifying the wife's car's anymore. Airport beater 2000 528i is nearly silent. I've thought about a primary muffler / center resonator delete as I would like SOME aural pleasure, but it's nice to have a quiet car too. 'Sides, makes it easier to rock to the BMW "Business" cassette player. Ha! Cassette player. It's most definitely NOT The Business. I can configure the exhaust on my Lotus to blow numerous different sound levels between <90dB to >116dB. It's nice to be able to scare you Harley riders every now & again. I've been fortunate enough to run quite a few unlimited sound days at Laguna Seca. Doesn't set off any alarms trackside that I know of, but has probably caused a few ears to bleed in the paddock accelerating up the front straight... Glorious straight pipe / fully uncorked exhaust. https://youtu.be/ymnOJ-cmGwk |

I already drive a nice car . I have nothing to prove and don't need the attention. Ill leave the excessive noise to the Ricers who want to get noticed.
