Yeah, the IMS is far worse than the heat ovens that they put on 1977S

The IMS failure doesn't have a specific mileage when it can rear its ugly head. Set the car up for the long haul. (And, yeah, your mechanic should have explained this to you.)

So which IMS fix did they do? They upgraded the part and the initial upgrade wasn't bullet proof. The later upgrade that is LN's big seller solves the core issue of lubrication by not having an internal seal so the lubrication is basically the supply of engine oil.

I have a IMS guardian I'd sell you, you would just need to get a new drain plug.

This is what a low mileage early 996 can look like when you pull off the transmission to replace the IMS bearing. I'm sure a lot of this oil is from a leaking RMS, but when I got the bearing out it wasn't shredded but it was also not moving freely anymore.
