83 SC Battery Replacement
Wondering what folks are running for batteries. Doesn't seem to be a lot of options.

Since a failing voltage regulator caused an old standard battery to boil over and corrode around my battery tray, I went the safer way this time and splurged for an AGM style battery (absorbant glass matt) which suspends the acid in a fiberglass mat to prevent leakage (similar to optima batteries) -- Been running the group 48 battery for a few years now with boring (i.e. no issues at all) results. |

There are lots of options out there...battery technology has improved greatly in the 34 years since your car was built. More energy in a smaller package.
Here is a thread about some options: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/861770-lucky-mans-lightweight-battery.html |

A few months ago I replaced my (older than 5 years) monster sized Group 49 battery with the Autozone recommended T6-DLG battery. It's a 5 year battery, It fit the chassis and mount like a glove, it's smaller and lighter and it's made in Germany. It also spins my 82SC over like it has no compression. I looked high and low did a bunch of comparison between online and local offerings and this one won out in the end. I couldn't be happier.

One advantage of replacing the huge group 49 battery with a smaller unit is that it gives room for one of those negative-post mounted master shut off switches. I found that the big battery just didn't give enough room for the switch.

I am considering both an AGM and that Autozone T6 DLG. The current battery is large and is dated 2011, so it has lasted fine. I believe it is a type 93? Thanks for the help.

Interstate
My last Interstate lasted 12 years with never a problem until the last day where I turned the key and all went quiet and i never heard from it again. It was the big one (group 49 equivalent). At 12 years and never a hiccup, I was satisfied.
Since that worked so well, I put another interstate monster group 49 in there 3 years ago and no issue so far. I would say if I had to do it again, I probably would go for the Interstate group 48 as auto parts guy suggested. Lighter, same or better specs and fits into the tray easier (and as said above there is a pre-existing hole for the smaller battery).

IF you go with the Autozone T6-DLG, don't just throw away the orange plastic piece snapped into the top of the battery over the positive post----until you remove the attached plastic "vent plug" that you fit into the side of the battery. If you want to hook the original vent tube to the battery you'll have to find a plastic fitting to fit the battery. On my 82SC I just lightly fitted the plug in the vent hole of the battery. Also: If/when you shop this battery at your local Autozone, it will have a round sticker such as "51-15" denoting in true German fashion: "This battery was built in the 51st week of 2015"! So find a "fresh" one! Last edited by SCadaddle; 08-10-2017 at 07:22 PM.. |

I picked up an Interstate MT7-34 today for my 89 3.2. I'm modifying my custom sled after it was holding the 15 year old RedTop which I retired because it must be time by now.
