How about 911R TIRES

I originally thought I'd put 205/50 and 225/50 tires on the car with the 7R wheels. But, pictures like this ...

... make we wonder. Those rear tires look BIG - none of these low profile wonders back in '72. So how about 205/65 and 225/60? They'd have that old timey look, they're very close to the standard size (actually closer than 205/60, just the other way) and I can get AVS Intermediates in those sizes for $44 a pop.

Anyone running that size tire on an early car? Thoughts?

Greg - the car in the pic looks like it is setup for tarmac historic rallying or the like. Most rallies of this type run under FIA rules which limit this age of car to 60 and up series tyres. They do not help handling at all. I normally use 225/50 in the rear of my 73RS replica (15x8's) but the change to 205/60's had a large negative handling impact. I would stick to the lowest profile, widest tread you can fit. - Ryan

Ryan...my guess is Greg is going for a "look" here as much as performance. In that regard, I agree...it's my aethetics, but I don't really like the look of too much "air" between the tire and the wheelwells. That's why I'm running 195/65...they are very close to the original diameter of 1972...

Greg, and others, here's a fun site. If you know the original tire size, (in Greg's case 185/70/15), you can they plug in other tire sizes, see how they compare in diameter and width.

Yes, I'm going not just a look, but trying to lean toward solutions consistent with the period. The 225/60 tire is only 1.7% larger than 185/70, or a 5.3" sidewall vs 5.1. Considering my car came with 165HR15 (which I believe is 165/80) the size nearly dead-on.

BTW, the picture comes from http://www.barchetta.cc/GT1/2000.targa.florio.cc.porsche.02.

Bob, that might be it. 195/70 is has tad more sidewall than 225/60.

As far as I know, Michelin still supplies vintage XWX in both 185/70VR15 and 195/70VR15. But it's $200 a pop....

I picked up (cheap) a set of AVS Intermediates in 205/60. They're $44 at Tirerack.

Bob, yeah, that's the default. Fact is I'm waffling, but I've got time. The sixes are off to Al Reed on Monday to get refinished. I'm still thinking the bigger tire would look cool on the rear with the 205/60 up front.
