Get the right stand, save yourself the headache. I also have an engine hoist with which to lift the engine up into the stand. I cannot rely on 3 friends every time. If you are working at this level, you really need the right tools.
GET THE RIGHT STAND !!!! You already paid $300 for the right yoke.

I had the same issue. Ended up buying another cheap stand with the smaller yoke insert. I ended up not really liking it so i used the upright portion from one stand and the legs and lower portion from the other stand. I had to drill two holes to make them go together but it worked out just fine.
When I tried to use the 2nd stand without modifying it, once I had the motor's weight on the stand it looked like it was bending badly. Like 15 degrees or more. Thats why i combined the two into my SUPER STAND! I never did take either of them back for a refund though...

I have the HF stand and my turbo motor on it that weights an absolute ton... no deflection. I wonder if they changed it over the years... |

A machine shop could make you an aluminum sleeve really easily if they have the stock on hand

Or buy one off craigslist, then sell it when you're done (x2 if you follow turbo owner's sensible advice).

So a dumb question why not just bolt the generic stand right to the engine.. I know the yoke is best but it works the other way as well.

Well to case studys.. I have a yoke and used many times but also put a car together this past year that the engine had sat on a generic stand for about 8 years prior to me putting the basket case together for him.. It was a 74 911 for reference. It worked for that.. ..

Agreed. Get a proper stand.
The HF stand looks like it's crap with the afterthought bracing. Last edited by pmax; 09-29-2017 at 05:36 PM.. |
