My 3.0L Under The Knife (Rasant Products EFI conversion)

Hello all,

I just wanted to share my experience of converting the 3.0L in my 911 SC to EFI last summer. I've been the proud owner of my 1983 911SC for just over 3 years now. The car had SSI heat exchangers and a sport muffler already installed when I bought it but otherwise it was mostly stock and well maintained. I had always dreamed of having the sonorous wail and the clean, streamlined look that ITB's provide but the idea of tuning and maintaining carbs had always intimidated me, while the complexity of fitting EFI seemed like something only the hardcore 911 gurus went for.

Fast forward to last summer, my 911 developed an air leak deep down in the bowels of the CIS system. When discussing how to address this leak with my good friend, Andrew Darud of Rasant Products, the idea of fitting his EFI kit using an AEM infinity ECU mounted in the rear passenger footwell, coupled with PMO ITB's came up. Andrew promised that it would not be difficult and that he would be more than happy to assist. I didn't need to hear much more, I was sold instantly and work commenced almost immediately.

Andrew, his business partner Tom, and I spent roughly 4-5 weekends removing the old CIS and building the new EFI harness and eventually installing the PMO ITB's. We completed the project in August of 2016 and after more than a year and roughly 4,000 miles on this set up I couldn't be more impressed with the reliability of Andrew's design, materials and over all engineering excellence. The car has been extremely reliable under hard driving conditions including near or at freezing temperatures at 7-8,000 feet high in the mountains numerous times. It never fails to crank on cold start and the anger and fury of the 3.0L at 4k RPM wide open throttle has to be heard to be believed. The car was Dyno'd last Fall making 200hp at the wheels thanks to the injection and exhaust mods, a sizeable increase from the published 180hp at the crank from the factory.

I wanted to share my experience working with Andrew and his team at Rasant because I truly believe after living with their product for a year it is the best on the market. If you are on the fence about overhauling the way your flat 6 ingests air and fuel, don't wait another minute, reach out to Andrew and Tom at Rasant Products and relax with the peace of mind that you will receive a tested, thoroughly developed and well sorted EFI system for your Pcar.

Here are some shots of the finished product and my car.

Love it! My 73 hot rod with a 3.2 motor just got delivered to Al Kosmal today to do the same EFI conversion. Great to hear how reliable it has been for you!

Thanks for sharing.

Did you delete all your AC as well or just remove the compressor?

Reiver 10-23-2017 09:32 PM

Sweet....nice update.....have they done a conversion on the Euro SC..82-83? I've SSI's and a Dansk sport on a basically stock unit that is still 'fresh' from a top end rebuild.
Wonder what the RWHP would work out to there? Have they done that as yet?

Complete AC delete. I forget how much the entire system weighs but its impressive how much weight that one system removes.

I don't believe they have had the chance to play with the Euro 3.0L yet but maybe Andrew can chime in to confirm. I'd imagine you would see gains over my US spec 200RWHP :)

If the price was just a bit lower I would be ALL over this. Right now $4500 (USD) is just a bit too much. Dreaming and saving!

Pichu,
Same here, just a bit too much for me right now...but it sounds like a win/win/win for power/efficiency/response.
I'm sure I'll save my pennies and hopefully go that route in the future once I get my engine installed and tuned as a baseline.

I would like to see a dyno curve.

Have you dyno it yet?

200 HP on the wheels is very cheap horsepower ! AND it looks good

I am using their EPM adapter...good stuff http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...s/beerchug.gif

I'd be interested to read your impressions of the auditory aspect of this change. I just rebuild my '83 and made some upgrades, but kept the CIS (which runs great.) I drove an SC with PMO carbs, SSI's and sport muffler and found the sound to be incredibly satisfying when on throttle, but when cruising at 80, surprisingly no louder or drony or annoying than my CIS car. It was great. I use my 911 for back roads drives, but also longer road trips and wouldn't want the engine to be any louder when cruising down the highway. EFI is very very tempting, but the cost risk is very high for a potentially loud/obnoxious engine sound.

We got it on a Dynapack type Dyno to do some light tuning last November. Overall we were pretty happy with both of the curves that we saw that day, pretty flat. The internals are completely stock but the factory cams seem to respond well to the EFI, ITBs and exhaust backdate.

Note: Looks like we actually only hit 197.5RWHP on that day in November, I knew my butt dyno sensed about 2 horses missing from the stable :D

Sounds like your '83 got some love and pampering on that rebuild, I bet you both appreciate those upgrades;)
As far as excessive engine noise goes, I don't believe there is any at all. Its only when you bury your foot in the loud pedal that all 6 TBs begin to make their presence known. If a noisy engine is your concern I'd say you have nothing to worry about and that the sound should be very, very similary to the SC on PMO carbs that you drove but with the added efficiency of EFI.

Thanks for the thoughts. One of these days I hope to experience one of these ITB cars in person.

Excellent results justjones. It's always good to hear the success stories with these systems. When configuring EFI systems, I often use the AEM Infinity (Rasant kit) ECU and Andrew provides a very professional kit and is good to work with. I configure these systems with various ITBs (Speed Triple, PMO or TWM/Borla), based on engine/customer requirements and they all work well with the Rasant kit.

I am a little biased and have everything to gain from saying this....... but I highly recommend going to an EFI/ITB system.

I don't think anyone would argue that this is an update over CIS...so, you are not tooting your own horn.
I appreciate the clean bay certainly and the electronic vs vacuum operation.
Simple question...are there old fashioned paper air filters available for that set up?
The K&N's just do not work well in the fine dust/dry air situation in AZ....the fine dust gets thru those type but does not do so on the old style paper...I know this from experience.

Where are the position sensors installed ?

I don't see the dizzy (and the adapter mods).

lightbulb8817 10-28-2017 05:20 PM

Rasant is helping me by providing the engine management for a 3.6L swap into my 75. Two thumbs up from me as well for Rasant!!
