Change SC coil location from engine to electrical panel?
Since I'm in the middle of an engine wire harness repair and rewiring project, I've considered moving the ignition coil from the fan housing to the electrical panel on the left side of the engine bay, like the later model cars did. I'm running a WOSP high-amp alternator with internal regulator, so I have space on the electrical panel where the external regulator used to be.
Aside from cleaning up the appearance of the back of the engine, and moving some of the wires off the engine, it seems to me that moving the coil will put it in a non-vibrating and cooler spot, which should help it last longer. Are there any downsides to doing this?

IMHO you should at least use a GND sealed wire from the coil to the rotor cap as voltage spikes are hughe and could affect i.E. the signal from the dizzy to the CDI unit

Andrew, you mean a shielded wire from the coil secondary to distributor? Don't you think this would lead to arcing inside the cable, since it carries over 40,000V spikes.

Fairly common on Twin Plug applications where space may be a premium.

No down sides moving the coil that I have noticed.
I have created a plug and play harness with connectors for ease of component configuration and maintenance. I’ll probably change the terminal blocked connections to a fused connection block with a protective cover. ![]()
