Wrong Cams: now what do I do?

So I got the heads and cam tower torqued down and test the cam fitment. Tight? Nope. Loose like wizards sleeve. It seems the 964 regrind SC cams I bought last year off eBay were originally 2.7 cams. Shame on me for only giving them a quick visual and not putting a mic to them.

So what cam should I buy (preferably something that’s readily available)? It’s an early SC 3.2ss running CIS with 9.5:1 JE Pistons. I liked the idea of 964 cams but should I go 993ss? Any other suggestions? I’d ditch the CIS but it’s sorted and runs too good to replace.

Webcam 20/21 is a good one. Works well w/CIS.

I've got the same engine specs as you with 964 cams. They really open up above 4k and still feel good at the lower rpms.

Why not talk to John Dougherty and see what he recommends?

John Dougherty turned my SC cams into 964s when I did mine last year. I'm also running JE 9.5:1 but kept the stock jugs. I'm very happy with my engine. Fairly flat torque curve, no "boost" after a certain rpm, which is exactly what I wanted for this car. Just torque whenever you want it above 3k or so. Very smooth down low too.

I spoke to John at DC then called Web Cams. Looks like John's 964 grind and Web's 20/21 are very similar. Web had the shorter lead time so I'm headed in that direction. Thanks everyone for the advice!

Agree with John W - - we have 20/21 in a 3.8L race engine and provides good torque curve - what we were looking for to stay in class and have better race starts.

Regards,

I have two 964 cams on the shelf I bought from Engine Builders Supply years ago for my 81.

Just saying. I don't need them.
