stuck pulley hub
I have a broken fan belt pulley hub and was wondering if there are any good ideas on getting it off the generator shaft, it seems to be really stuck. I've tried PB Blaster, a little heat and some prying, it's moved a little but I'm worried about messing up the generator.

Mike:
One of those small steering wheel pullers - the kind that grab around the back of the pulley and pull while centered on the generator shaft, would probably be the best way. If you have an Advance Auto in your area they might have one for loan. Another way is to get two nuts of the shaft thread size and use one as a jamb nut so the shaft can be kept from turning. With the shaft held tight, put some big vice grips on the pulley hub (real tight) and lightly tap it clockwise/anti-clockwise and then start twisting it while pulling/tapping outward. It sounds like the woodruff key is stuck/rusted in the slot. If it still won't come off, use the non-official Porsche pulley removal tool - a Dremmel with a bunch of those round abrasive metal cutting discs - one small "relief" slot cut parallel to the shaft and you're home free. Good luck, Bill. Last edited by WFBowen; 03-23-2007 at 06:55 PM.. |
