Engine bay hose and foam tube broken

Hello,

I accidentally tore off the foam tube in the engine bay. What is the best i can do now? Replace? or glue it together?

If to replaced, where do they sell the foam tube?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you,
Bao

Hi Bao,
These orange foam pieces are no longer available, not factory and not as replica. You could try to glue them, but I think it will not work and hold for a longer period. In general the foam is dry and brittle and falls almost apart after 40 years in service in a wide temperature range. I used isolating foam for central heating pipes for the foam pieces to the rear window heater nozzles. Perhaps you can find a larger diameter to use in stead of the orange one. Do not leave it, its an important sound dampening item like the ones to the rear window heater nozzles.

I hope this gives you some inspiration,

Otto

Hi Otto,
Thanks for comment. I check with sierra madre collection and they have one made by porsche part 616.108.896.01 for about 60 u.s. dollars.
I'm tempting to buy it, even though it cost so much.

I bought a section of the correct size from McMaster Carr. It was about $10 including shipping for a 6 ft piece. It will be black instead of orange. You want part# 4463K135 at $4.38.

Bao, Jim,

Well, I didn't know that SMC had the part in their catalog. Contact them, because not all the parts they present on their website are available. I was unlucky when I wanted to order a quarter windows pivot. Nevertheless they have a lot of special parts.

Why not go for Jim's solution? You will never see it again behind the fan shroud and it's much cheaper. I know, it's always hard to decide whether to go for original/factory look and function or just for the function o the part.

It appears that the Sierra Madre $62 part is black also. I ordered mine online nearly a year ago so can't be certain they have it but I would bet they do.

Jim,
I went to mcmaster website and look up part4463k135 as you mentioned. This tube has an id of 7/8" and for a pipe size 1/2" od, the pipe from my pic measure 1 1/2" od.. I think this will not fit. I think i need a larger insulator.
This is a great idea and much cheaper then sierra madre. Thanks for the advice.

Maybe I am confusing the foam tubing you need with the foam for the rear window defrosters.
Regardless, measure the OD of the black paper corrugated tubing you have and measure the ID of your broken foam. Then look at the McMaster Carr chart and order the closest size.
