Amark,

Thanks. I always have to go look at my manual to remember straight. I'll edit the message in case someone else needs it.

Regards,

Cooling Fan Difference

Question on this old post.

So the cooling fan for a/c cars has a shorter height than normal cars?

Thanks,

bw, IIRC the fan is the same - its just that the pulley for the A/C sits behind the fan - so it has to be removed. I also did not have any of the other issues jared mentioned.

Thanks for your reply. I've actually left the a/c pulley in there. I think the pulley isn't perfectly aligned with the alternator pulley. Should I change it with a regular washer? Wondering if adjusting the alternator could compensate the misalignment ....

Also, can I change the it with the engine still in the car by removing the front engine sheet metals?

Most 914s had a flat piece (sort of a washer) between the fan hub and the fan. 914s with A/C replaced that with the pulley for the A/C. That is behind the fan.

The front of the fan has the pulley that drives the alternator. It has nothing to do with the A/C pulley, except if the A/C pulley is left out and not replaced with the washer, the fan won't line up with the alternator pulley.

Here is an exploded drawing: http://www.pelicanparts.com/914/parts/engine/aircooling_large.htm

The washer is part #15, and that is the part that gets replaced with a pulley to run the A/C. The pulley part of the fan is #12 in that diagram, and that pulley holds the alternator belt. I hope that helps you visualize what goes where.

Thanks DD for the information. Now I can clearly picture what's there.

So I heard the a/c was a dealer installed option for 914 back then. Did they install some washers underneath the alternator pulley in order to line up with the cooling fan pulley? What's their trick?

Now I have to think if I can install the washer( have one on my old engine) w/o taking the motor out of the car. I have never taken the engine sheet metals off with the engine still in the car.

The AC pulley replaces the spacer behind the fan. It is the same thickness in the middle, so it does not move the fan forward at all.

Thanks DD. But sorry, I am confused here. What would be a reason for the misalignment?

What I'm saying is that there should be no misalignment.
