I'm running 8.3:1 static with a web cam #73. I have the .060 copper head gaskets.

Thanks Ed...

So what made you go with a non-stock cam?

Is the .06 dim before or after one torques the heads?

The #73 has a little more lift and good duration. It has a nice strong torque curve like the stocker.

The .060 is the material thickness prior to torquing the heads.

No biggie Mike. My C/R is 7.7 : 1 and I run no gasket between the cylinder and head. I am using a .060 cylinder shim to achieve the desired C/R. I've had to many people say that the head gaskets are not good to run. I definately would love to hear a different opinon. If I need them now is the time. Oh, I'm running a brand new stock cam. I chose the stock cam to elimenate any doubt about what if anything could be causing problems with the motor while testing and evaluating the Turbo setup. I used the KISS method on the build. Once I dial it in and am happy, I'll probably tear it down this next winter and put a different cam in and probably stroke the motor..78x96. There is no replacement for displacement!

All great info...

No case splitting for me, I don't need anymore excuses for not having a running 914, LOL

Stock cam, but I am running Pauter Roller Rocker Arms for a little more lift...doubt it'll help much, but I see no harm in it.
I'm still trying to decide where to put the intercooler, I wanted this style, but got out bid for it on evilBay

My turbo is a lowly IHI unit for mid-80's Subarus....but it'll work for now until I can get a good deal on the proper sized T3

What type of external oil cooler is everyone using, and how are you plumbing it?

Is it obvious to everyone out there that Evil Ed is my hero? :-)

I did it to see if it could be done, he took it to the next level and did it better IMO.
CIS rules.

The stock cam works very well with a turbo and will pull harder from around 2500 or 3000 rpm (depending on the turbo) all the way up over 6000 rpm. A slightly hotter cam will work better to a point. High lift will be a good thing, but not too high.

Also Anything 270 degrees are a no no I've been told because some of the boost charge will go right out the exhaust pipe, never tried it myself.

You may have to monkey with the oiling on those. The oiling on those things works differently than stock. And don't you have to do some machining to put them in??

Sammy, if Evill Ed is your hero, then EJM must be a demigod!! No offense, Evill, but I thought that EJM's setup was even better than yours! (Definitely more sophisticated, at least.) He is also running CIS, but his CIS is a wee bit different from Evill Ed's. And it's all factory bits, too! (Some from the Audi factory, some from the VW factory, some from the Volvo factory...)

I found this photo. Its an Ozzie set up.

2 liter VW Type 4 engine adopted with Porsche cooling system, digital injection and ignition system, Twin turbo with Catalytic converter closed loop. The engine has been tested on engine-dyno with 180 HP.
