Metal trunk rollers

I bought metal trunk rollers when i first bought my car over a year ago and i kind of gave up trying to figure out how to put them on. However now it has gotten so bad that the trunk will not pop open when the automatic switch is pressed because there is no long enough preassure on it.
Does any one have any tips?

The mechanism that pops up the trunk is a spring on the latch mechanism. Maybe you need some grease in the latch assembly, or maybe that spring has relaxed some. If you are really sick of it, you can change over to modern-style pneumatic struts for around $30 and some drilling.

Putting the trunk rollers on involves taking the tension off of the torsion rods, sliding the old rollers off, and then sliding the new rollers on. There is a lot of energy stored in the torsion rods, and they can really hurt you quite badly if they slip somehow. (Don't ask how I know this.)

Mike Cooley designed a pretty cool clamp-on tool that can be used to take the tension off of the torsion rods. Others have used deep-well sockets with extensions on them to put leverage on the end of the torsion rods. Don't let them slip... I recommend against using open-end wrenches, though. (Again, don't ask...)

Take a 6" long 3/8" extension from your socket set. Put the socket over the torsion bar tip, pry down and put the roller on.

Just keep your fingers out of the way.

Gotta love this board and the search function.

One of my plastic trunk rollers broke in half. Ordered the new metal ones from our host. Was trying to figure out how to install them. Did a search here, found the 4 year old thread, used the 3/8" deep well socket with the 9" extension and viola! Trunk is fixed! Not even a 5 minute job.

Thanks Pelican

Jim
