Turn signal question
Last night I replaced my turn signal assembly, primarily to fix my high beam switch (the plastic tab holding the high beam contacts broke). It's working great now.
I'm surprised that this replacement did not fix another annoying problem; turn signal cancellation when the wheel returns. Does anyone know how this can be fixed?

The tab on the back of the steering wheel hub needs to be on the driver's (left) side of the steering shaft when the wheels are straight ahead. Is this correct on your car?

I don't know, but I will look! When you mean at the back, are you referring to the back of it that you can see with the turn signal assembly on the shaft?

Oops, sorry, "back" is confusing.
The piece on the wheel is about 1 inch wide arc of metal that protrutes from the steering wheel down the steering shaft so it fits between the turn signal switch and the column shaft. Straight ahead it pushes the little tabs of the turn signal switch out. As you turn, the little tabs stick out because the piece on the wheel rotates away. When the piece on the wheel rotates back (straightening the wheel) it hits the little tabs and cancels the turn signals. Did that make sense? |

That might explain it. I have a MOMO wheel/hub/extension. Can this be backfitted to work, or am I just being naive and foolish?

IIRC, you can take the cancelling ring off the original hub and put it on the MOMO hub. It attaches with three screws. I think it might have the horn ring on that piece, too?
I have a 911 column in my car, so it has been a while since I looked at the original 914 pieces and how they adapt to a MOMO hub. Hopefully we can get more help from someone who knows/has pics. |

Since I don't own an original wheel I'd have to source the part. Maybe the Pelican guys know something?

I will look for it. I remember that getting the ring on was tough as the holes did not quite line up perfectly.
And you know I would have never thought to search the archives for this issue. Life can suck sometimes when you are a non-mechanically inclined idiot like me!

I have a MOMO wheel and hub adapter, the turn signal cancellation tab will fit on the back... you should be able to find one off a donor car somewhere... we're not exactly talking a part that needs to be brand new or even look pretty...

Well I looked through the flotsam of my wheel swap out and did not find anything resembling this part. If any of you have one of these lying around, maybe we can work a deal!

OK today I went into the wheel and viola! fixed the turn signal problem. I had to move the Momo adapter counterclockwise one tick, and the tab was in the right position.
The tab was still on fine. The wheel I replaced this one with (a Dino) was having the same problem, so I can only assume that the tab was not placed back in the correct position when that was installed. Thanks to all, especially James, for taking the time to explain, both in words and photos, how this thing works. It's so nice to use the turn signal without worrying I'll be driving down the street with my blinker still on like an idiot Excursion SUV driving soccer mom!
