I'm not sure how many times some of us have removed/installed engine in our 914's (sounds like a good Topic), but I've done mine almost a dozen times in 2+ years between both 914's.

I only used the tech article on one occassion - to take the engine out and put it back in the first time. That's the last time I did it that way, as I find it far too hazardous since the body has to be on jacks (not stands) while you lower it all down toward the dolly, and the reverse when you're installing.

For around $70 - 150 you can buy an ATV jack (good for 1000lbs or more) that goes from about 3" in height to over 20". This enables you to place secure jack stands under the body to a very comfortable height. Then the ATV jack can be raised to meet the engine/tranny, and the whole assembly lowered safely and slowly from there. I've got the whole procedure down to where I can remove and install the engine by myself in a reasonable amount of time.

This also facilitates placing the engine on a more permanent stand, as the ATV lift gets the engine up off the ground, making it easier to lift, as opposed to a dolly.

Just a different approach. Hope it helps.

Gerard sounds like a good safe approach...do you have any pics of the jack or a link possibly to look at a ATV jack?

I'm kinda stupid and don't know what an ATV jack is..

I've also seen these (called motorcycle jacks) at the local Auto parts stores. Here they tend to cost less - approx $70.00.

Enjoy,

thought these pictures were timely for this thread. black is marhyde. i start with self etching primer today. local auto body supply matched paint # for silver final coat. lines/cables were shot/ questionable and i knew i would replace them. nipped them off with bolt cutters before engine drop, way easy. note how wide open the eng bay is with calbes and axels removed. more to follow as things more forward.

wide open bay. note the konis with progressive coils that came on the white wreck. sway bar/droplinks painted and bushings replaced. soak the bushings in HOT water for 5 min and they go in very easy.
