Ahhh.. the magic of POR-15

I had some surface rust on the floorpans underneath all that nasty tar...

Total time spent removing tar, grinding rust, and grinding away seam sealer on the floors and firewall = 40 hours.




Next. I applied Marine Clean and Metal Ready from POR = 1 afternoon (about 4 hours)



Finally a coat of POR-15 semi-gloss. It's still drying here, but it's so nice looking! = 1 hour.





I think this will be highly worth the effort for the final project.

I've used por-15 for years...I love it! As a matter of fact I'll be brushing some on today! Looks great, did you use heat to remove the tar board, I find that a light torch helps remove it.

After stripping and painting with POR-15, what do you do with the pan? Any sound proofing? Or just carpet?

Mike, I went through this recently myself. I was thinking that I have pictures just like those that are posted here. I used this stuff called Dynamat. It's a soundproofing material that's similar in consistency to the tar that was there, except it has an aluminum backing. It's sticky on one side and you just press it onto the floor. I read that 80% of cabin noise comes through the floor. Of course, whoever wrote that has never driven a 914 with the top off! ************************ carries the Dynamat or your local car stereo shop probably carries it. Performance products had a good price on it though (it's a bit expensive).

Do a search around here on "dynamat" and you'll find a number of other, less expensive alternatives that other people have used.

From the pic it looks like you didn't grind through the factory
primer (grayish) in most places. I thought from a previous thread
that that would not let the POR-15 do it's best. That it should be in contact with the metal to prevent rust spread. Anyway that's how I did it recently.

I've never used POR15 but a lot of folks swear by it, including my neighbor who restores old Mercurys and Fords. Looks good on frames/chassis parts. I should get some to try. I just finished putting sound deadener (Soundcoat polymer barrier) in my 914 yesterday after doing the whole car inside and out with epoxy self-etch primer. This is after stripping it bare and replacing all rusted steel (or using a rust converter where only lightly pitted). Thought I'd upload a picture to show you.

The areas where there was surface rust, I wire brushed a decent amount away from the edge of the rust to the clean factory primer. I ground away all the seam sealer.

That factory primer is bonded there pretty friggin tough. I also don't plan on getting this car wet any time soon, so I'm not too worried about further rust.

Where can I get POR-15 and what is the best way to remove the rust and apply the product? Also how do you apply it into the hard to get places like the uni-frame and channels?

Just type in "POR-15" on your browser and it should be one of the first on the list. As far as rust removal goes, "POR" is short for "Paint Over Rust", so all you really need to do is knock off the big stuff and brush/spray it on. What really amazes me about the stuff is that even brushed on, it looks like it was sprayed leaving almost 'Nil' brush marks. Also, if the metal is prepped correctly, POR-15 is tough as nails!

Kelly your car looks great how did you apply the por-15, did you spray it on? Was that a PITA?

http://por-15.com/ About $31.00 a quart, I always brush it on, it hardly leaves any brush strokes. I would be afraid to put it in my good gun, because it dries so hard and fast you could ruin your gun if you did not clean it quickly after use with thier special thinner! I've used a lot of their other products, it all seems to be quality stuff!
