if at first you don't succeed... buy a second car
after one eveluation after another I have come to the conclusion that I just bought the first 914 wrong, I should have read the pelican article BEFORE I bought the car... it was a learning experience. SO I bought another... a friend sold me his which has an excellent body... the first car will become mostly a donor car, but I will try and keep it at least running. So I can sell it when I get the "new" one running.
the "new" car is also a '72 with a 1.8 (bus?) engine. so, wish me luck guys.

some pics of the new '72
pardon the pics... the color is gaurds red...
the last one is the only rust on the car... the battery tray and other trouble spots have already been fixed... my other one will make a much better donor for this one than vice versa...

I'm chalking the other car up as a learning experience... "here's what to avoid"
a) don't pay too much(almost 3000)! vs. 1500 for the new one... b)know the trouble rust spots... I looked in all the wrong places c) know your abilities... engine wok can be done at an apt... but Body work is tricky if you don't know what you are doing, and don't have the room to do it.. I originally was just going to buy the rims off of my friend... but the body was hard to pass up! now I need to do the top end on my 1.7 engine(the best part of the original car, with the interior which was really great too) and put it into this one...

Those sideview mirrors look a little crazy in that picture.
What is it about the stock mirrors that makes everyone take them off? Does me liking stock mirrors mean that my 914 has warped my otherwise good taste?

How are those mirrors attached? Could you show a side view picture?

don't ask me... I have 2 cars that both have those funky mirrors... I prefer the stock(chrome) ones.. I think the $ is a big factor for most people though.... it's hard to find good cheap stock mirrors... if you do find them, let me know...
as far as how they are attached... you'll have to wait, I will not have the car in my grubbly little hands until July 4th... it's in Houston, I'm in Dallas and I didn't look as to how they are attached... hopfully NOT bolted!!

The base that would run along the door is turned at an angle, and they are screwed into the winshield frame.

oh well... the holes can be filled (like the stock holes were) or... that could be a cool new look...chrome mirrors mounted higher instead of on the door... but I *HIGHLY* doubt that I have bigger concerns... I need to get the 1.7 engine running from the donor, and I need to find seats and a back pad in some condition... if they are good I'll put them in the project... if they are bad I'll move the donor seats/pad over... it's weird... I thought i was getting a decent price on the now donor car because the interior was fantastic(3 rips between seats and no other flaws) and the engine seemed strong...but this one the interior is gone but the body is near-perfect... C'est la vie
