so I have some goop in my tank...
Hey guys, I seem to have some rust or other goo in my gas tank. I ran the level down to the reserve, and my car started running horribly. My fuel filter looks awful too. So my question is; What can I do to get as much of this stuff out as possible until I have the time to completely pull the tank and clean it out? I doubt siphoning will get it out, but I might try it... I thought about using the fuel pump to pump it out, but it wouldn't get all the gas from the bottom, where all the slop is bound to be. Any ideas here?

i wouldn't pump anything through the $300 fuel pump except gas. i think you can drain the tank from underneath

I say pull the tank... take it to the car wash and clean it out good, then put some gas and B-12 in it... leave that for a day to loosen up more stuff and rinse it out again... let it dry/get all the water out then put it back in and change the fuel filters...

I think Pelican has an article on how to seal the tank, includes info on cleaning as well... Check the Technical Articles section.

Hmm. Now that I read the artical, I see that it's not that big a job to remove... I guess I'll just do it. Any tips or tricks before I get started?

It's a straight forward job-very easy to remove the tank when there's no gas in it. Be careful when you remove the lines to the bottom of the tank-it's easy to get gas splashed in your face. You also might want to consider buying the tank restoration kit-it's great, easy to use, and helps prevent this from ever happening again. Also remember to buy a new sock filter for the tank-I got mine at my Porsche dealer but I bet PP carries them too.

My tank was awful when I got my car, all of the dividers and what not had completely rusted and there was about 2 inches of rust and goo at the bottom of my tank. In my opinion you should consider just trashing the tank and picking up a new one (mine was $70 off ebay)and worth the frustration and mess trying to repair mine would have caused!
