Master cylinder question
Sorry to rehash what I'm sure has been discussed a few times before. I looked in the master cylinder upgrade tech article and could not find the answer. I took out my master cylinder and front brake lines today. The m.c. has the number '19' on the casting. This does not mean that it's a 19 mm - right??

The only true way to find out the size is to measure it with a metric scale or caliper.

John, then what you're saying is that '19' doesn't mean squat. So I'd assume it's a 17mm because from the appearance of things it looks like the original master cylinder, stock 914/4. Thanks ...

John, are you sure about that??? I think the 19 means that it is a 19 mm master cylinder.

I took it apart this afternoon and measured the i.d. - it's 19mm! A pleasant surprise.

Since you measured it, you know for sure. I have come to not trust part numbers and such and even if a company says the part is the same, I measure it. As an example, a good friend of mine ordered replacement pistons for his racing 356 and put them right in and nearly blew the heads off since the pin hole dimensions were not quite the same!!?? 19mm m/cs are the way to go good luck.

My 17mm MC had a 19 mark in it in the middle of its body. Once I got it out I found a 17 on the section near the brake pedal.
