carb and intake

I picked up a GA 2.0 liter for rebuilding, and it is fitted with one 2bbl Solex, an aluminum plenum, and long intake runners out to the heads (probably the original FI runners); 3-stud 914 heads and flanges. Anybody familiar with this setup? how's it work on stock or slightly modified (higher compression but not high rpm) engines? I figured the long intake runners would be better for torque than two carbs on short risers right at the heads, and I'd like to build an engine that is strong right off the line. This one appears to have experienced an uncontrolled thermal event, so I don't know if it's even salvageable, but I thought I'd like to know what people think before starting on it.

Funny thing is I had a perfect (1,200 mile) Weber 32/36 from a Benz 220 I had that probably would have worked perfectly, but I got tired of moving it around and finally threw it out about 5 years ago. With all the other crap I've hung onto, I wonder why that got the boot.

Those long steel intake runners don't work very well on a type 4 motor. The fuel charge condenses on em so you get uneven mixtures. The results are poor driveability and mileage.
Get some duals and never look back! The short manifolds heat up and help with the intake charge for decent warm ups and driveability. Get a good linkage and sync em and they work pretty well IF you install a carb cam. The stock FI cam doesn't work all that well with the carb set ups.

I've been driving a 1.8 with the famous 2Bbl Racing Pinto Progressive Super Carb for a few years now. I keep reading that it stinks, but I've had no problems at all. Decent mileage, seems to perform O.K.
On the other hand, I'm finishing a 2.0 with FI and will be putting it in very soon. Maybe then I'll say it is a crappy way to go.
