Guess what I found?

...Complete car right around the frickin corner from where I work! What are the odds, I sez to myself? Never seen another around 'cept my friends'. So I call the guy (college student, no knowledge of the car other than "I bought it from my boss, and it needs a battery".)
I take the whopping 4 minute drive to check it out. Get this, it's a '73 2.0, "S" option. BN pirellis on perfect aluminum wheels, including new tire on matching spare, new brakes, PERFECT chrome bumpers and trim, yellow re-spray, front spoiler w/ brake ducts, rear "GT " type spoiler, new monza exhaust, stock FI, almost pefect interior, overall really sharp looker. Everything looks pretty much original, INCLUDING THE HORRIFIC RUST! Geez, I've only seen bodies this bad in pictures (no comments on any ex-girlfriends here people). The longs were 'long gone', so bad that the doors wouldn't open, and when you tried - very carefully - they wouldn't shut completely - there was a huge overlap on bith sides. I peeked under the rockers, and saw BIG holes, even under the sill plates . Equally disturbing, was what used to be a proud, solid battery tray area. Lots of nice wet carpet and tweety-bird floormats in the trunk too. Ooof.
I tried turning the key, but it wouldn't turn - it was jammed or something.
I politely asked what the lowest he'd go was, and he said 2700. "So what do you think, it's a really nice little car, huh?" he says.
Hoo, it looked like a banana. What does it sound like it's worth to y'all? I would suspect it would be perfect for parts, just about everything you could unbolt and take off was clean and straight.
Ciao
Jeff

Yep ... $1K tops, since you can't even start it (to prove the engine turns over, or even runs).

$2.7K? Heck, it'll cost at least that much just to get both doors to open evenly ...

I'd say $1000 if you planned on using it as a parts car, for a low rust car that might not be as "pretty" on the outside. The wheels, interior bits and bumpers may be worth it. As for getting it to restore, ain't gonna happen w/ that much rust.

I would offer him about 600 to 800 bucks since it will take you a while to get all the good parts off. It is not worth even close to 2700.

Wow, U know my buddy and I were joking about offering him a grand, and going halfsies on it. 500 each, and we'd take everything off that we wanted. How common a situation is this? I mean, a car with so many goodies, but being a rolling rathole underneath?
I was drooling and saying to myself the whole time "perfect bumpers and tops for Kevin.....complete 2.0 for me.........extra tranny to tinker with......Mahle wheels for Kevin........dingless doors for me.......spoiler for Kevin.......tweety mats to line dumpster bottom with...." etc.
You're all correct it seems - maybe I'll call the guy back and offer him a G?

Offer it; worse that'll happen is he'll tell you where to shove the Tweety mats! Than come back 2 weeks later and offer the G-note again ...

he will hesitate if he is not in teh know about all the nasty rust. I had a guy tell me once "it has a new eng, never been fired up" the car had been sitting for 10 years and it was full of water. sounds like $500.....OK a grand since you live in the land of the no 914 and would be paying mass shipping if you bought all the stuff

Hey all a-yah
Well, I took your advice and called the owner. I very politely asked if he'd take a G-note for it, and he said he was sorry, but 2500 was the lowest he'd go. Told him to keep my number if he couldn't sell it - who knows. I got all crazy, thinking about how fun it would be to salvage all the parts from it, to keep as spares and diddle with.
If anyone knows of a similar deal, (northeast US), let me know - I think we'd still be interested in going halves. Sounds like a good idea for a winter project.
Cheerio

Offer 500 and call it a day. I just picked up 2 for 450 in about the same condition less the nice chrome bumpers

Buy him a six-pak & tell him you will haul the rust bucket away for free because it's your civic duty to keep crap off the road.
