Fantasy 914
The 914 is different things to different people...(I am not admitting to being different in a 'weird' way)...I think that is one of the qualities making it such a great car. To some, its a collectable classic car, to others a street racer and to most others, something in between.
We have seen many stock restorations and many cars modified to minor and even radical ways. 914's have become 914/6's, track racers, Porschevs, 916's, GT's M471's and even a couple of 928 conversions. The conversion/replica idea that gets me droolin' is a 914/8 like the prototype built for Dr Ferry Porche...you know the warm silver one-of-a-kind Porsche 908 8 cylinder, 260hp hardtop, not the red one for Piech. Seems mostly straight forward...maybe put the 928 motor in instead (anyone have a 908 motor?). The interesting details like the gas filler door in the hood and the steel sunroof would be something to see. I feel the need to go to the Fatherland to 'research'...is it tax deductible or is there a good book available? Has this been done before, if so is it documented somewhere? What is your fantasy 914 like? |

Here is a link to my Fantasy 914. http://www.kinesismotorsport.com/914_index.html
I'd change a few items, such as the color of the rims, but I don't think I'd change much. I think the flat-eight would be cool as well. Have you seen the prices of the Boxster engines and tranny's? Compared to a late model air cooled 911 these things are cheap. I'd like to get the boxster 6-speed or even the 5-speed and swap that in my current car. The new shifter sure would be slick, but even better would be the RUF transmission that eleminates the clutch pedal, using hydralics and sensors. I'm sure I'll think of some more stuff to add to this thread. ------------------ Mike Mueller Antioch, CA 1970 1.8 |

Thats a nice fantasy 14 Mike... I think id take that too. The rims gotta be polished or chrome though.... needs some chrome.
The V8 is a very doable dream car. It is best for the street though, because many racing orgs will not let it race within a competive field of its own. Not that it wouldnt blow by anything out there ..... but its nice to be able to run with the big guys, but they dont want to play!..... |

I agree I think the red is too much...but other wise....WOW...
I really like the boxter motor idea...something esoteric about the idea of 'the old and the new'...is there any hope that the Boxter engine would bolt right up to the ole 901 trans? I'll keep it in mind for a couple of years until when there are more Boxter engines available to do the conversion...by then maybe my 2.0 heads will break and I'll be 'forced' to do a conversion...oh well, my loss. 8^) |

I doubt the Boxster engine would just bolt together to the 901 tranny but it might.
I believe the 996 GT3 engine is a 993 air-cooled block with the 996 water-cooled heads on it. So if that is the case, will a 993-engine bolt right up to a 901 tranny? I know this has been done with the 993 engine and the 914 but I'm pretty darn sure the tranny was switched to a 915, but it was more than likely done for strength and not due to incompatibilities between the engine and the tranny. If I was to use the Boxster engine in a 914, why not just go ahead and use the Boxster tranny ? They where designed to be used as a set, that and although I've driven a few very nice shifting 914's (not mine!!!) I've driven a few Boxsters and the shifting was right-on target.... ------------------ Mike Mueller Antioch, CA 1970 1.8 |
