Transmission Swap

Has anyone swaped out their tailshifter for a sideshifter? I know that the trans will just bolt right in. The question is, how much of the linkage will I need to replace. Is there any other considerations that I should be concerned about? I have a 911E 2.2 motor in the car with the original 914-6 motor mount. This mount does not interfere with the shifter rods like a quick-six mount would, or so I hear. Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated.

To convert to the sideshift transmission you're going to need to come up with all the linkage and associated parts. You need the shifter, the tunnel rod, and the obvious shift rod that runs from the firewall to the console on the transmission, basically the shifter and everything behind it. You might need a special firewall bushing to run this system on an early chassis, and you might want to modify the shift rod, taking out the bends to achieve a more direct shot to the transmission and assure clearance, especially if you have heat exchangers.

I just made this modification to my 70 914-6. I have a stock engine and exhaust. If you read my earlier post and it's reply it is simple. Trans bolts right in, replace the linkage with an updated version including shifter and linkage. The firewall bushing does have to be replaced, I got mine from Performance Products. The linkage from the firewall to the trans just has to be straightened out. I took mine to a welding shop and told them to use the existing ends, align them, match the length and weld in a straight rod. Works fine so far.
