Stainless Heat Exchangers
I recently acquired a 914 parts car & well I was dissembling, I noticed that the heat exchangers "look" like they might be stainless steel.
I don't have any photos at the moment but I'm wondering what you guys might think: The Heat portion (part surrounding exhaust pipes) looks like shinny new stainless steel but the underlaying exhaust pipes look just like regular metal (including surface rust) Any thoughts from the experts would be great.........Vern |

are there two parallel shinny chambers that go into one rusty triangular flange? That would be 1.8L 75 smog dog exhaust.

Try a magnet on them. The better grades of stainless are non-magnetic, a magnet won't stick to them.

These are not the 75-76 type, where the two pipes merge into one. These are in a 1974 2.0 (two pipes in & two out).......Vern

Here is a photo comparing the stock exhaust with the SS ones. The SS ones have a widder opening and probably flow better, and are lighter. Got these from ebay for $175.

mine kinda looked like the ss ones once I got all the oil cleaned off of em... but they're just the stock ones...I just painted em with high heat engine paint and hopefully they'll stay halfway decent for awhile.
