Rough Running / Dies

Hello again all.

After finally getting a working fuel pump I finally heard my car run. It is a 70, 1.7 with FI. I replaced all the fuel hoses, Hot tank the gas tank, sent my harness to bowlsby and had it repaired, major tune up (plugs, cap, rotor, wires, coil) and now a rebuilt fuel pump. All of my injectors are clicking when i rap the throttle with the car off. I tested each bank. The car starts right up.

The problem now is that it won't stay running. It idles real well but after about 5-10 seconds it dies. If i give it pump the peddle it bogs and dies. I checked all the fuel hoses for kinks and such. I am at a real loss as to what it could be.

I am also having a hard time setting the timing. The clutch is shot so I cannot get the points in a position to che4ck the gap. Whats the best way to do this?

Any help is apprieciated. I will also provide any more information if needed.

Luke

Several thing to do/check. What is the fuel pressure? Should be 29# or so. Might be too low or the regulator may need adjustment? You can turn the engine over by moving the fan belt by hand with the car in neutral to get points set, since if they are off spec then timing will be off. Set the points to spec when the rubbling block is on a cam lobe. After these are done, try pulling the air hose off the AAR so you get a good shot of air which will give a good high idle and then start it to keep it running for a while and then put the air hose back on the AAR. If it stalls then open the throttle bypass to bring up the idle. Once it is running check and/or set the dwell with a meter and then set the timing. Good luck

also check that the lines to and from the gas tank are not reversed. these lines would be located (on a stock car) on the passenger side engine compartment, towards the rear. sometimes, when people re and re the engine and fuel lines, they install them reversed.

Can stuck valves cause the same symptoms? Also, how do i check the Fuel pressure regulator?

I think i need to be more descriptive.

I crank it over and she fires instantly. She idles for about 10 seconds and dies. If i tap the gas pedal it bogs down but starts idling again without dieing. I can do this and keep the car running for about 40-60 seconds but can't keep it running longer than that. It's almost as if the fuel pressure is dropping. The voltage at the pump stays the same while she is running. I have triple checked all the wiring and became very familiar with it after I received my harness back from Bowlsby.

1. Can point gap cause this?
2. Can tight valves cause this? Compression?
3. Can clogged injectors cause this?
4. MPS?

I list these because these are the only things I have not checked.

I feel like I am going in circles but missing one important thing LOL

Sounds like timing, valves out of adjustment or even too rich...just a guess. Lean it out if you can (open idle air screw)...and see if it improves a little.

I would check all those other things you mentined too...

Valve adjustment
MPS
TPS calibrated and functional
Leaky injectors (hold them into a bottle under pressure)

What is your fuel pressure? Does it stay rock-solid at 29 PSI? It should...
