fronts calipers on back

I have seen an occasional post about moving the front calipers (now upgraded to 320i) to the back. We have the original size rotors and have also added an after market proportioning valve.
So far what I know is: I will loose parking brake, bolt pattern is the same, appears to need shims so that the caliper is on center with the rotor.
At the end of the effort, it seems that this would increase the swept area about the same percentage increase that the 320's gave me in the front.
Are there any other pros and cons??
BTW, this is for track only use.
Thanks

for a track only car, i'd go for it. I've got the same setup on my car, and on occasions, if i "surprise" my car, i can feel the tail trying to swing around. Under controlled braking, i've found them to be much better than the stock setup (that was coupled with the 320i's of course)

hopefully my future 245's in the back will resolve my tailhappy braking..

If you use any caliper that is afront one on the rear you lose the parking brake. In my state (VA) that is an automatic rejection for inspection. Also you are relying on the transmission not to pop out of gear while you are parked say on a hill. Alot to ask of trans w/ 20+ years on it.

I am running vented rotors up front, 911 SC front end. I am using the 320i calipers in the back. They bolted right on without shims. I am not running a proportioning valve and have a 19mm master cylinder. I have not had a problem with rear lock up. The car runs every day with occasional autocrossing....

Another thing about leaving the car in gear acting as a parking brake...if parked on a steep enough hill....you leave the car....come back and it is either resting on the car in front of it...or down the hill...kind of scary. what happens is pretty much the engine will go through a compression stroke...
Ask me how i know...as the popular phrase goes. You only do that one once.

I do have a parking brake...but it is not adjusted correctly right now...something i will fix eventually.

Another question, is it bad to put in a tee in place of the prop. valve. I am thinking of doing this, but wanted to know if there would be a problem with rear lock up before the front. I have a 19 mm master cylinder and stock brakes.

Both our 914s have a Tee in place of the proportioning valve and have never had a problem with the rear brakes. If I lock anything up at an autocross, it's ALL of the wheels!!!!

MikeZ,

i'm interested in knowing more about your setup for brakes. what rotors are you using in the rear? what bolt pattern do you have?

I am using 320i BMW calipers in the rear, I have removed the proportioning valve due to the engine mount used for my six conversion...you will lose the use of the e-brake...

The stock 914/4 rotors are redrilled to five lug...btw 914/6 rotors will work and are as cheap as 914/4 rotors...you have to remove the rear hub, drill them out and press in new studs...if you do this, change the bearings while you are at it...need more imfor, email me at
