2.0 exhaust on 72 model 914
Ok this may sound like an odd question butt....
I have a 72 914 and it seems I remember a discussion about the rear pan being different from 72 to 73. I have a 2.0 bannana muffler and 2.0 exchangers I am going to put on when I do my 2.0 engine conversion. Is the exhaust heat shield on the 72 in the way, will I need to remove it or modify it? I am sure somone out there has done this conversion on a 72 and I really appreciate your help...... Ben PS, I also have 916 bumpers, will i have to cut a hole in the rear bumper for the tailpipe? |

If it helps any, I had a 72 1.7L in a 74 with 73-74 2.0L SSI heat exchangers and a Monza 2.0L muffler. I "beleive" all 914's have that heat sheild. You will need the 2.0L muffler bracket or modify the 1.7L bracket by enlongating one side. As for the tail pipe exit I think with that type of custom bumber (how many different companies made the 916 glass bumber? one, two?) you'll have to wait and see.

Thanks JP,
Let me explain a little further... What I thought I heard was that the 73 and up cars had more room under the rear pan. So as to except the larger daimeter 2.0 muffler. Now I may be wrong in assuming this, but the 72 and earlier 1.7 exhaust was smaller by camparison and the exchangers have that upward curve in them near the flange. So my question was is the heat shield on a 73 "smaller?" or the same size as the earleir ones..... I guess I will find out if there is a need for modification for sure next weekend when I do the swap? Thanks |

I don't really know the answer to your question.
However, the deal with the heat exchangers is that the 1.7 muffler has its inlets pretty much in the center of the muffler. Porsche designed the 1.7 heat exchangers to fit the VW 411 muffler that already existed. They re-did the exhaust system for the 2.0 model, but based it on the 1.7 one. They made the exhaust go straight back, instead of having the kick-up in the back. To put the muffler in (more or less) the same place, they moved the inlets of the 2.0 muffler to the bottom of the muffler. For the most part, the only thing that is higher on the 1.7 is the muffler inlet. I don't know for certain that there are no clearance issues with the muffler and valance, but I strongly suspect that there are none. --DD |

I have a 71' with a 73' 2.0L exhaust system. I noticed that the heat shield on my car was a little bigger than the on a 75 I was scavenging parts from. I just put on a 73' muffler bracket(the inspectors for a PCA high speed drivers-ED program did not like my special Turbo coat hanger wire muffler brackets
) It fit right in and lined up with no problems. |
