Upright cooling

Here is the cooling system I am building for my 914.

This is use Two Type4 Fans, Two 36hp Shrouds and Two Oil Coolers.

Each 36hp shroud cools two cylinders and an oil cooler.

I am putting a 2715cc together and this should cool it nicely.
And yes it will fit in a 914.

There is a hole in the plate that the Altenator is mounted on. It is just to the left of the Altenator.

This is where the filler neck will attach.

Not how I'd do it personally. I wouldnt trust the cooling of my oil on cheap heater hose..

I'd like to see Jake's thoughts one this one...

It sitting low When in the proper spot the Chamber has about as much volume the size of the cooler. The lower edge of the duct is mounted jus below the top edge of the cooler.

It looks rather tall, will it fit in the engine bay with lid closed.

With the fan turned that direction, where will it be obtaining it's air from??

When the backing plate is installed the intake will be suffocated..

With all that plenum volume on the left side of the shroud you are gonna have one hell of a time directing the air on that side down to the cylinders. Thats one of the issues that I had with the Type I DTM in the beginning.

The other challenge is keeping that fan together at high RPM with any overdrive at all. Joe made a Hybrid fan for the DTM 15 years ago and I have tested it airflow wise and it didn't work worth a hoot. The last one I tested scattered the fan with a 1.24:1 drive ratio with a crank speed of 7,000 RPM.

The stock TIV fan cavitates at 4400 RPM a great deal, be ready to machine about one half of those fins off to get around this..

Glad to see you trying it, be ready for a year or so of trial and error to even get it close to being efficient.

Good luck- You'll be needing it!

The fans will turn at crank speed.
The air is pulled in from the front to cool cylinders 2&4 and the rear to cool 1&3 .
It has two air inlets like a Carrera 4 cam shroud.
The volume of the 36 hp shroud is still stock, there is a spacer between the two shrouds of about 1..5 inches.

You go, Steve. If you can find 4 older go kart head temp gauges, the single window type, you might get them on the cheap. You can prove your unit's worth with them.

FWIW, if I was building a 2.7L Type 4, I would use a proven cooling system, not experiment. With that kind of displacement, a DTM wouldn't even be enough if it's slightly out of tune.
