rebuilt engine costs...

I was wondering what sort of prices I would be looking at to get a rebuilt/refurbished 1973 2.0 liter engine.. also where would I get such an beast...

here is my situation.. I am a college student, and don't have the time or place to work on the car, and after borrowing garages all summer to work in, and after having one thing after another break, I am sick on working on it... I finally took it to a mechanic to have the valves adjusted and he said the head gasket is blown..

the engine is currently sounding like the valves are trying to escape through the side to the case.. (tick tick bang tick tick bang etc..) and the car has started backfiring when I let off of the gas.. it leaks oil like there is no tommorrow and on and on..

sooo.. I wanna new engine..
any thoughts?

When my 2.0 ate a valve, I bought my 2.0 from Pelican . Though what I bought was the short block and a set of heads. However, sounds like you need a turn key 2.0

Also check some of the post, occassionally someone has a freshly rebuilt 2.0 at a reasonable cost

My 2.o was just shy of $4500.00 - and I removed/installed it. That was also for a carbed motor, they didn't have to mess with the fuel injection. It also used all of my existing periphial stuff (alternator, distributor, valve covers, etc.). My only upgrades were euro pistons and jugs and the appropriate cam for the carbs. I also refinished the sheet metal myself. Not cheap, but not outrageous.

MrBob - there are good used 2.0's for sale all the time, often guys who do /6 conversions or build race /4's sell their perfectly decent stock motor. Have you tried checking the back of Panorama, and the Rennlist classifieds?

Hey Scott - what cam did you use with the carbs? I'm building a carbed 2.0 and my only experience is with D-jet motors.

It is from Web-cam. We called and told them what else was being done to the motor and it is what they recommended. Off the top of my head, I don't remember the lift or duration - I'll look it up this weekend and drop you a line. It is not radical by any means. My requirements were decent drivability with the possibility of an occasional drivers ed or autocross. It idles very smooth - nothing like when we would cam the watercooled 8v VW motors.
