Unidentified wires
I have a '74 914 2.0 L that is pretty much stock. I have noticed two wires coming thru the firewall in the tunnel that are cut and taped off. They are both yellow with a red stripe and in the 8 - 10 AWG range. Just wondering what they are supposed to go to and if I need to reconnect them to anything. They have been this way for 9 years now.
Also, I would like to reconnect the seatbelt warning wires. A PO has chopped up the wiring in this area a bit. The passenger's seat belt wires have two yellow wires going into a 2-pole connector. The driver's side has only one wire going into a 2-pole connector. There doesn't seem to be a male connector for these female connectors to plug in to. If you have any thoughts or know where there is a schematic for the wiring in this part of the car, let me know. Thanks Pritchard |

I believe the yellow/red large gauge wires are part of the ignition/seatbelt interlock system that originally terminated at a relay on the floorboard under the passenger seat. It is very common to find this system disconnected or bypassed because it is troublesome -- in the fail mode the car won't start!

Pritchard, for a schematic see the 74 wiring diagram. In Haynes in B&W or on the Pelican site in color (six pieces).
If I recall correctly, either just the passenger's, or both pass and driver's bottom seat cushions have sensors in them with a wire coming out of the back/bottom. Those tell the seatbelt system when someone is in the seat. The seatbelt latches have two-pole plugs in them, I believe those simply plug into the wiring harness. Most or all of this eventually winds up in the "seatbelt interlock relay" or "Logic-Relay" as the wiring diagram calls it. Personally, I'm not sure why you're going out of your way to reconnect the system... Personal taste, I suppose. --DD |

Upon reading your responses, I think that I'll leave the wires as is. I was thinking that I would like to get the car as close to original as it could be, but it sounds like that would be a bad idea in this case.
Thanks for your help. Pritchard |

Good choice...that interlock is a pain in the ass.....just like the interlock for the clutch on newer cars and those stupid buzzers...
