Make it fast?
Ok, I know this question has been asked many times but I want to make my 914 faster. What is the best setup for the 1.7? I already have a dual 40 setup. I know porting the heads is going to cost me. Does anyone have a diagram that shows how much I can take of them? Im guessing there has to be one out there since I found some for my super rare Saab Sonetts. I know asked a cam qusetion before but I want it all to match so it will be more efitiant(sp?). I want fiberglass almost the whole car so I wont need a larger engine to get it moving. Let me know what you have done to your 1.7?

I also have a SAAB Sonnet 1971 25,000 miles I have owned three of them,also a 64 96 stroker and 12 96 V-4's. Do you know of any two stroke drive line's for sale?I perfer MonteCarlo 850 but will consider any.Steve

Wow, thats cool. I have 2 Sonett IIIs(72,74) and a rare 78 99GL sunroof model. It is 1 of a handfull of GLs sold over here with a factory sunroof. The EMS and Turbo were the only ones that were supposed to have the sunroof option. www.saabnet.com has been a real help. Are you a VSAAB member? I dont have a 2 stroke motor but VSAAB has a classifieds section full of neat stuff for 2stroke's, v4's, and 99's. The guy I bought my 74 Sonett from was selling a 67 Monte Carlo 850 for 1200. It looked pretty good for its age. Good luck. Vintage Saabs are quickly dissapearing. |

For basic porting you want to open up both the intake and exhaust ports removing material to the size of the gaskets. But first, what size valves are you running?

Everything depends on your budget for parts. I would dump the heads for 1.8 heads or modify the 1.7 heads to bigger valves. Stock 1.7 heads have 39mm intakes w/ 33 mm exhausts. Stock 914 1.8 heads have 41x34 valves. 2.0 914 heads run 42x36 valves. I would also look into running the 96 mm pistons to bump up your displacement to a 1.9L. Bigger valves for breathing and bigger pistons for more displacement mean more HP. Mild porting isn't that expensive, radical porting with flow testing is. Here the more money you throw at the heads can result in more power but first do the simple things, valves and pistons, and cam. Alot of people run 44 intakes and 38 exhaust valves and a Web cam with sucess. If the motor is apart why not find a 2.0L crank and rods to go with those 96mm P&C's for 2056cc. Even more power! Balance everthing and you have a motor turning out over a 100hp with tons of torque.

So I can put 1.8 or 2.0 right on a 1.7 with 96mm pistons with no problem???? WHat would be my expected HP with a properly tuned 1.9L, ported/polished 2.0 heads, web carb cam, and Dual Weber IDF 40s backed by a Bursche exhaust system? Thank you for the help. I appreciate it.

The 96mm cylinders that were designed to go on 1.7 liter motors will not fit properly in the 1.8 or 2.0 heads. The OD is smaller, to fit into the smaller recesses in the 1.7 heads.
You'll need to get the cylinders that are intended to fit the 1.8 or 2.0 heads. (I think that's how it works, that the 1.8 kit uses the 1.7 kit's pistons, for the deck height, and the 2.0 kit's cylinders, for the OD.) --DD |

Hmmm Dave, I thought that the only difference in the 96mm P&C's was the wrist pin height (offfset) to set the deck height correct due to the stroke difference 66mm vs 71mm. The 1.7 heads would have to be flycut for larger pistons unless you (72 porsche914)stayed with the 90.5mm stock ones. Even the 1.8L ones (93mm) won't fit in the 1.7 heads. I thought I read elsewhere you (72 porsche914) have the 1.7 SSI exhaust which is smaller diameter pipe.So,running 1.8L heads (42x36 Valves), 96mm P&C's, Webcam for carbs, 40IDF's, smaller SSI exchangers I still think would put you at about 90-100HP at the rear wheels. S0, gross at about 100-110 HP. To get higher numbers bigger valves, custom porting, bigger carbs and a wilder cam is needed. But then, is this a street car?? Because a wilder cam, bigger carbs don't make for the best street car. All the torque and hp move up in the rpm range so the car isn't very fun to drive in traffic.There are lots of people who run this type of combo, maybe Jake Raby can comment on the best combination of parts for higher hp as he is an engine builder by trade. I didn't like the carbs I had for the street (40 Dell's) and went back to the FI for ease of use.
