As you can see, the issue with this is engine width..
There are pushrod driven heads on the horizon that offer more power potential than the 911 heads and are much simpler to install. They are being whittled away as we speak and will be developed fully by the end of 2007.

I am not claiming I want 911 heads on my Type 4 engine. I am however facinated with the ability and imagination of the guy who put this engine together. I also saw another guy putting WRX heads on a VW engine. I personally am stuck on the idea using a pushrod engine in My 912 and when those heads are ready I will look foward to reviewing them

The heads are being machined as we speak, these have been in the works since 2001 and are unlike anything ever offered before... It's so outside the box that we are working on patenting the technology.

Should we subscribe to this thread or will you start a new one after completion, Jake?
That is quite the ingenious shade tree mechanic. I still prefer chains since they tend to stretch over break, but it sure looks simpler than the 911 assemblies in the garage. Have you heard anything about how it would run compared to "4 clyinder" 911 boxster engines? There are guys that are using Subaru heads on Model T's too. 16v Type IV's and 16v Model T Fords...makes ya smile.

Hey Luke, it looks like you understood my point here, The guy who built this claims 400 horsepower and also said it is streetable. I agree with using chains myself. Is there a 4cly Boxter motor? I thought Porsche scrapped that idea.

I think Luke is talking about the Dean Populous (sp?) engines that Gary Emory has installed in a number of 356 "Outlaws". They're 2/3 of a 911 engine, literally! The case is sectioned, the cam tower is sectioned, custom cams and crank, and so on. Pretty neat stuff, but very very very expensive!

Why?...I mean WHY!? Jeez just leave it a six and have 1/3 more HP and infinite parts availability.....

It's a 356. Those are guys who are plunking down 50 large for what is essentially a souped up Bug. (And if they were more like 10 large, I'd love to have one! They're a way cool souped-up Bug, but still.) They are not averse to spending money to get things the way they want them. And 356es are four-cylinder cars.
Not to mention, it takes a mighty big shoe-horn to put a 911 engine in one. --DD

4 Cylinder 911 Engine
Thought you guys might want to see a picture I took several years ago of the 4 cylinder 911 engine setup for a 356.
As I recall from the builder of the engine, he said it was designed specifically for an under 2.0 liter racing class and the engine produced 190 horsepower. The cost for the kit was around $8,000 plus the donor 911 motor, plus labor. Yeah this not project for the faint of heart. I think it is a absolutely a beautiful engine and an engineering masterpiece. Henry

I've seen the 356 that was in Excellance a few years ago with that engine in it. Owner lives here in Florida. I think I saw it for sale for $250K.
Those engines HAVE to go for more than $8K.

$8K, plus the 911 engine, plus labor. And it probably assumes that the 911 engine is completely fresh. Probably more like $25K all-up.

So let assume $25K have you seen the price of a rebuilt Carrera 4 engine lately? In relative terms it seems worth it, if it is reliable and it's internal parts are available on a steady basis, this engine makes alot of sense in the long run for 912's 914's and 356's

Makes a ~200 HP Raby motor look quite reasonable...

Here's the thing, we don't have a clue what a Raby motor cost that's a closely guarded secret

We certainly have a clue it will be less than $25k.
His kits are priced on his site. The full custom builds vary of course because each one is different. You can get a turnkey Raby-built motor for $10k. Depending on the options, a 200hp build will probably be more, but I doubt double. |

Anybody see the most recent issue of Hot Rod Magazine? There were page after page of Tyoe I VW sedans and Ghias producing 800hp and up. Kinda puts this thread into persective doesn't it?
The thing that is most interesting to me about Dean's 911 modifed 4 cylinder motor is that it produces this terrific horsepower and don't forget the torque....in an under 2.0 liter motor. That to me is the most interesting feature to consider. By the way, the $8.000 kit price I mentioned above, is at least 6 or 7 years old. I would hazard a quess that the current price for the kit would easily exceed $12,000 today. |
