Electrical problem

Trying to help a friend who recently picked up a 73 914 with 1.7L

When the brakes are applied, or turn signal is actuated, the generator light comes on real bright. I'm assuming its a short, I'll find a wiring diagram, but if anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears.

Always fun tracing those gremlins. Time to start cleaning up the wiring connections. I would start with the rear tail-light assemblies. Take the bulbs out, the assemblies apart, the connections loose.... Clean them all up well... Those parts are very problematic because they tend to get a lot of moisture. And the symptoms you described can be caused by corroded terminals in those areas. Wishful thinking on my part, but I hope that's all it is.

Check the fuses, too. They can pop and still look OK at first. Pull them out and brush the ends and the fuse holders with a wire brush to help them make good contact.
