shift linkage
I am really having trouble adjusting the shift linkage after removal of the shifter, shift tube, transmission and well everything. I installed new bushings and put it all back together and now only get 1st and reverse. Is there a trick I need to know about. Or maybe a magic chant to be used? Any help would be welcome. Thank you

There are several methods.
The factory manual has you put the transmission in neutral. Loosen the pinch bolt on the bottom of the gear shift lever, and move the lever to the right as far as it will go. And make sure that the bottom part of the lever is straight up and down in the fore and aft axis. Then rotate the front shift rod to the right as far as it will go, and tighten the pinch bolt. You will need to remove the cover plate at the rear of the center tunnel to grab the front shift rod when you do this adjustment. The guys over on the 914world BBS like to put the transmission in 2nd or 3rd (selector at the transmission in the middle, not slid in or out, and either rotate forward or aft) and then rest the gear shift lever against the spring-loaded lockout. Then tighten the pinch bolt, and put the lever into neutral. Make sure the bottom part of the lever is straight up and down; re-adjust as necessary. In any case, test the shifting action, and if it seems like you can get all the gears, try a test drive before you button everything back up again. --DD
