a novice-like question on the console gauges... I've seen them in 914s in a straight vertical line & seen several where the center gauge is mounted to the left of the top & bottom gauges(like mine is). I've seen both styles, aren't both versions factory installed?? Whats the differentiating factor? year model? VIN #..? I know the cars with A/C have the gauges angled towards the driver... does this have anything to do with it?

There were two different A/C setups, by VPC and DPD. Both used up space under the dashboard for the vents/controls/etc. That took up some of the space where the center console went, so some modifications had to be done to the console.
The DPD setup put the gauges in closer together but then angled them toward the driver. The VPC setup put them in "staggered", with the top and bottom gauges offset to the left and the middle gauge offset to the right. See Brett Johnson's "Restorer's Guide" for photos and more info. --DD
