Bronze shift bushing, What a difference!
 

Well, I finally got around to installing one of those bronze shift bushings at the trannie. I got it for christmas this year, boy this thing is the best thing since sliced bread! What a difference it makes! I have all new plastic bushings but the one at the trannie fits very sloppy. With the bronze one now it really shifts sweet and tight! Now other people will be able to shift the car...

Is the bronze bushing identical to the plastic? I noticed my plastic one seems to have some play.

The one that is in the firewall also has some play. Does that one come in bronze also?

No, it doesn't look like the plastic bushing at all other than it has a hole in it. It is solid bronze with a shoulder and a grove for a snap ring. It is fairly tight fit the shift rod. It was only $25
I have not seen one for the firewall yet.

I'm rebuilding my shift rods. and installing liniar bearings inplace of the plastic bushing. I bought a set with the correct size shaft. These bearings move circlular and liniar at the same time. I'll let you know how it works out.

I've had two interesting problems with the bushing on the side-shifter console. The first was that the plastic bushing would slide up and down--the hole that it mounts in has been oval'ed out. The second problem is that the rear shift rod has been necked down from wear.

Both contribute significantly to slop. I epoxied the bushing into the side-shifter console, and that helped a lot. I will eventually be replacing the rear shift rod completely, but the replacement that I bought does not quite fit on the front shift rod... The hole in the coupler is a little too snug to let it get completely seated.
