6 Cylinder Suggestions

I'm thinking of getting my 2.2 and 901 out of my 914 and looking for a fuel injected motor replacement like a 3.0 or 3.2. Any suggestions on what fits best and why, is much appreciated...

racer 01-18-2012 05:17 PM

They all fit!

However, some might argue that the 3.0 is about the largest you want bolted to a stock 914 trans. Some say a 3.2 is still ok.

Will these be carbed or FI motors. For the 3.2, you will need to find a place to keep the brain. CIS is a little easier, but sometimes folks mod the engine lid to fit the CIS unit.

My favorites are 3.0L carbed motors. Looks and sounds just right imho. Of course, given the greater HP adn TQ, you might need to worry about tire sieze (flares), brakes, stiffer suspension etc. Might also need to plump up some additional oil coolers if not already there. Its my recollection that the stock 2.0 6 in the 914 runs about 10 degrees hotter than when the same motor was in the 911. Living in Vegas, heat might be an issue.

Yes, I need to go with an FI due to the strict emissions here in this county..You would think that the car would be exempt since its a '71...I also love carbs but I'm just tired of dealing with the smog requirements.

Suspension, oil cooler and flares are all set.

Heat here is definitely an issue but this car has never had any overheating issues.

If you are going through all this trouble, why not get a 3.6L?

That's what i did. :D

And yes, i still run a stock 901 ...

A stock 3.2 with Motronic injection is going to be the easiest swap and fit all of your needs. Just my 2 cents.

I just finished doing a 3.0L injected install and I love the way it starts on the first click! I modified my injection and removed all of the smog so if you are planning on keeping it smog compliant you will need to find out the minimum requirements for your location.

What fuel distributor/intake are you using there? Neat setup.

the essential question is what level of smog compliance you are trying to achieve

what are your Nevada rules?

if you are going to require a CAT, some guys have installed them inside 911 bannana cans
-used strictly for going thru the test

if you will need to keep running the 02 sensor, that is another level of complexity

i am planning a 3.2 witth dme conversion in place of my carb'd 2.7RS - i just bought a dme chip that eliminates the need for the 02 sensor since i do not need to consider smog rules

you should search Pelican 911 & 914 for the many topics that touch this transplant issue and the dme issues

i have 2 complete 3.2's, taken from running cars, in the garage right now, one will be FS - i am in central Calif

It is the stock fuel distributor on an early Volvo 242 intake!

I cut the stock air boot in half welded up the 90' bend then powdercoated it Yellow and attached the air boot to each end!

Conversion questions continued.

1. For those of you that have retained the 901 tranny what clutch configuration have you used? Early flywheel modified with the nine bolt arrangement to mount to the 3.0 crank or the Centerforce clutch package that allows the use of the stock 3.0 flywheel? And what has been your level of satisfaction with your choice managing the HP and TQ increase.

2. Who makes the 3.2 Motronic chip that disables the o2 sensor and what does it offer for a performance gain? Steve Wong?

That Volvo intake mod is super trick!

That Volvo intake adaption is super trick....

dme chip

FR wilk - reseda, ca - "Race chip"

find 'em on eBay or on his site PowerPROM.com

flywheel

i bought the centerforce clutch and conversion flywheel from GPR

- was about $1000

i posted all the parts number details elsewhere on Pelican awhile back - search for that

993 flywheel (lightened) with a ring gear adapter and KEP Stage 2 clutch and pressure plate ...

So far I love the combo but I have not finished my 5-lug suspension and shock/sway bar upgrade yet so I am still waiting to get it over 85mph!

It is running at about 71-72mph 3000 rpms, I think! I have a flipped H gear that I plan on putting in another gear box with so I can swap it out and see what the speed/rpm's are! It is a bit loud at 3000 rpm's and above!

I used the stock 3.0L flywheel and bought the ring gear, PP and clutch from Patrick Motor Sports!

The Volvo stuff took me a long time to figure out and I finaly just welded up my own intake 90' elbow! It is very clean! I have thought about putting together a package and selling it!?

Might actually get some buyers for that if the price is right.
2.7 or 3.0 conversion w/o the $$$ carbs or ITBs would attract a lot of people.

Intake Mod

I agree that there a number of takers for the Volvo intake adaptation at the right price.... I might even include myself in that group.............

That might be something I would be willing to try to put together! The challenging part is the 90' elbow, the mounting brackets that attach the Volvo mount to the intake runners and the modified fuel/air boxes with the pop-off valve. But if people are willing to modify there own boxes then it could be done for a reasonable price!

jeffs9146 01-28-2012 08:37 AM

Here is what the modified fuel/air box looks like!
