Adjusting Clutch

I recently rebuilt the pedal assembly in my '73 1.7L. I have reconnected the clutch cable, and tried to make the adjustment with the two nuts on the rear portion of the cable the same as it was before the rebuild. However, I don't seem to have the same amount of freeplay at the pedal befor the clutch engages. My questions are: Could I have done something in the pedal assembly effecting the freeplay of the clutch? And, is the only place to adjust the freeplay for the pedal the two nuts at the end of the cable (and I will just have to play with these a little bit more)? Thank you in advance for your words of wisdom.

I can't think of anything that you could have done on the pedal assembly that would affect the free-play.

The pedal-end of the clutch cable screws into a clevis which then hooks onto the lever which is attatched to the pedal. If you unscrewed the cable from the clevis you could have changed the free-play that way. But there's no real reason to do that for a pedal cluster rebuild, so that probably isn't it.

I think you just need to play with the double-nut on the tranny end of the cable.

To Dave Darling - Thanks for your reply - you helped me in the past with an odometer which was not working, and I respect your opinion. Would you be able to respond to my question entered on 5/10/99 labeled "Open or Closed?". Thanks again!

Keith,
The free-play you were getting probably came from the factory plastic pedal bushings that you replaced. My 73' pedal cluster had the free-play until i replaced the stock bushings w/ the bronzed bushings.

John is right, I forgot about that. Bad bushings can cause pedal movement that does not move the cable at all.

Keith--if I don't answer a question, it's usually because I think it has been answered, or because I don't know or don't have an opinion worth sharing.
