914-6 starting problems

I have a stock 914-6 and have been running across starting problems. It will start but misses very badly. Then it will rev up to about 4500 hundered rpms and miss and backfire. Then I just shut it off. Any suggestions? I am brand new to these 6's, but I am also very excited!

Timming?

Carbs are in sync?

Getting fuel to all 6 cylinders with the proper pressure?

Getting spark to all 6 cylinders?

But i'd start with the basics. Timming and carb sync.
