914-6 rear brakes

I have a 3.2 in in my 914-6 and also have Carrera ATS brakes front and rear.
I kinda miss my hand brake and would like to put the old factory setup back
in the rear. I have replaced the proportioning valve and with the 3.2,I really need
the better braking capability of the big brakes.
Comments, thoughts and alternatives will be greatly appreciated.

Regards.

Dan

The Six rear brakes were not that different from the Four rear brakes. They used similar solid rotors, for instance, and the handbrake mechanism worked the same. They do have larger pistons, though.

They are quite expensive, and might not be that good a match for your Carrera brakes up front. You can have them built with spacers so they fit over the vented Carrera rotors, but that adds more expense.

Other options are possible. For instance, there are mechanical "spot calipers" that can be installed over the rotors that you can use as a handbrake. You can adapt the 911 drum brake setup onto your 914. Both of those require some fabrication and welding, BTW.

You can also use a line-lock, which is supposed to maintain pressure in the brake lines even when you're not on the brake pedal. The problem with those is that they tend to let go after some random period of time, which can result in your car rolling down your driveway and into a tree. (Which has happened to at least one person I know who relied on line-locks.)

Or you can decide that the front brakes do the majority of the work anyway, and that the stock 914-4 rear brakes are acceptable, and switch back to them.

Actually this is a factory 914-6 and I have kept all the components for the front and rear brakes.

If you already have factory 914-6 brakes, put them back on, new (great) pads and adjust it properly. Send the calipers to Eric at PMB if you want them looking and working 100%.

Yup - what Mark just said. These babies are going on the rear of my original Six, courtesy of PMB. They are the GT calipers and I have vented and drilled rotors to go with them. Stock e-brake too.

So they will work good and safe with my Carrera front brakes as long as the proportioning valve is adjusted correctly?

914-6 rear brakes

I actually have the 911 Carrera front brakes with the stock 914 rear calipers, and the combination seems to work just fine. It's a light car and the fronts do most of the braking. Unless you're experiencing rear lockup, I wouldn't worry about it.

I used the standard 914-6 brakes on my factory 6, even after upgrading the engine to a 2.7l RS spec, 210-240hp. They were fine. Just use good pads.

Thanks for the response guys.
I think that since I have considerable expense in the big brakes and they certainly
are superior to the stock setup, I will probably go with the spot caliper option.
Any sources?

It's not coming up for me at the moment, but:
Wilwood High-Performance Disc Brakes makes lots and lots of options.
