The car will start and it'll idle rough, but when you slightly push down on the vacuum advance on the distributor it idles perfect, you let go and it almost dies trying to idle. Buy a new vacuum unit or is this a easy fix?

well to me it sounds like the advance plate in the dizzy is loose and letting the points go nuts
check the ball bearing in the dizzy to see if it is there if not i can check to see what size it is and you can pick one up or remove the vac advance and lock the plate some how, it does not do much anyway, just off idle after that nothing have you timed the car right ie: removed and cap the vac line and timed it to 7.5 degrees i just looked at my spare dizzy it looks like when i push down on the vac chamber it would pull a little retard in, if it where loose, i would try to time it again
