Input needed: 1986 Porsche steering wheel in a 914.

Hello Everyone,

Okay, a few posts back people were talking about steering wheels in a 914 and the different types. I like the stock Porsche 1986 style wheel and decided to try it. Since I found out that a 911 wheel has the same spline pattern I went out and found a nice one and have installed it (Without any instructions) I just made things work.

What I would like to know is what you all think. The 911 wheel is the same diameter, but a bit higher off the center and it is 2.5 inches closer to me. Do you all think this is a good thing or bad? I have looked at it and it seems I can weld off the 2.5 inches and move the spline closer to stock 914 position, but is it fine just the way it is?

Everything on it is perfect and works, like the horn and turn signal cancel thingy. I used old 914 wheel parts for the contacts and such since the 911 one is just a bit different. As well the 914 part covers the 1" gap that is left because the 911 wheel has the spline thing in a different place in relation to the steering hub on the 914. "I used the oven to melt the 914 part just a bit so I could insert the metal spline piece from the 911 wheel and wrap it tight around the 911 spline part. Then I bolted that to the 911 wheel and then bolted everything to the 914. That worked great!"

The cool thing is that I can swap the 914 wheel and the 911 wheel whenever since there was no mods to the 914, hub, original 914 wheel, or the 911 wheel. All I did was melt an extra 914 part I had in a box from another 914 wheel.

Okay I will shut up now! Here are some pics:

Personally, I like the look of the 914 wheel over the 911 wheel, but if the 911 wheel fits and everything still works, then what's really important is what YOU think.

Actually I am interested on the position of the wheel mostly. The wheel is 3 inches closer to me than the stock one. Do people do this on purpose or is this a bad thing? It seems very strange in that position.

Chris,
My 74 914-6 conversion came with the same wheel. I like it once I am in place but I don't like it when getting in and out of the car. I am going to change to MOMO Fighter wheel. I have one on my 911 SC, I like the look and the feel and smaller size.

In a previous post about steering wheels I had complained about how close my MOMO steering wheel is to the dash. So close, in fact, that occasionally I inadvertantly turn on my windshield wipers when turning due to accidentally bumping the wiper arm. So, I would prefer my wheel to be a bit closer to me than it is, but not so close as to hinder getting in and out of the car. I would think that if you don't have any trouble getting in and out, and it doesn't feel "too close" then that would be just right.

A note about steering wheel size: My MOMO is about 12" in diameter. I love the look and feel of the small size of this steering wheel but it does makes it hard to see the speedometer. That's OK though. I'd still pick the smaller wheel over improved gauge visability.

Oh you poor demented teeners. Just give it up. You know you all desparately want a 911, but a steering wheel does not a 911 make.
