How important are these CV joint thingies?
On each CV, there are these little dog-bone things that the bolts first go through (then the dust boot flange, then the CV itself). They're kinda like washers that pick up two bolts instead of just one.
I'm trying to hook up a 911 electronic speedo I have, and I need to duplicate the pickup scam that's buried in 915's, etc. So I need to make a little sheetmetal "flag" wheel for my 901 to trip a sensor, and I'm thinking of mounting it on an inboard CV flange in place of those little dog-bones. Will this somehow alter the Zen of the car, or are these little doodads there just to make sure the dust boot flanges don't flex too much?

I believe that you are talking about Item #7 in the picture below.
To answer your question, I have no idea. |

The CV bolts have serrated lock washers on them. I would think that these would tear up the boot flange pretty readily and the locking function would be lost.
The thick "tabs" give the locking washers something to bite into, and also distribute the load a little better. That's my guess. |

John,
I don't know the answer to your question, but I'd also like to know their purpose. I wondered what the plates were for when replacing my CV's, but I just put everything back in its original position which seems to have worked fine. Good luck, Mike |
